4-8 October 2021

The first LTTA mobility within the Erasmus + project VR @ Geoparks was held in Sicily in the Madonie Geopark from October 4 to 8, 2021. The project participants from partner countries Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Italy hosted Petralia Sottana in the Province of Palermo in which the headquarters of the Madonie Geopark are located.

On the first day of activities after the welcome ceremony and presentation of the project program, presentations about Sicily and the Madonie Geopark, participants visited the farm Macelleria rurale Argoverdi where they had the opportunity to enjoy local food and local products, and after returning to Petralia visited the city archeological Collisani Museum.

The next day, Tuesday, was followed by a survey of geolocations in the Madonie Geopark area (Piano Farina: Sentiero dell ‘Aquila reale, Pomieri: Alberi Monumentali, Piano Battaglia). Participants, with the help of guides and experts, photographed soil samples, specimens of fossils, flora and fauna that they had the opportunity to see during a visit to the geopark. Then they visited the place Polizzi Generosa where after a reception with the mayor they visited the museum Museo Ambientalistico Madonita.

The next day, the project participant was warmly hosted by the mayor of Isnello, where he fully enjoyed the tastes of traditional Sicilian cuisine under the auspices of the Madonie Geopark. The Mayor of Castelbuona, a city in the heart of the Madonie Regional Nature Park, welcomed the participants by giving them a tour of Ventimiglia Castle. After visiting the Museo Civico museum, he enjoyed tasting the products for which Castelbuono is famous, namely manna and panettone.

On the fourth day of the mobility activities, the participants, accompanied by a local guide, toured Palermo, the capital of Sicily, and later, with expert guidance, visited the Orto botanico. The last day of mobility was reserved for a visit to Cefalù, a medieval town on the Tyrrhenian coast located below the high cliffs of Rocca di Cefalù and with an imposing cathedral.

After returning to Petralija, in the late afternoon in the mayor’s office a reception and closing ceremony was held where the results of the first mobility within the Erasmus + project VR @ Geoparks were presented, and participants were awarded certificates of participation after the final speeches. Project participants said goodbye to Sicily with dinner and the sounds of traditional Sicilian music under the auspices of Madonna Geopark, the host of the project.

With their household and hospitality, their Italian colleagues have certainly set the bar high for the next mobility, which is planned for Croatia in November 2021.
